Carnivals…state fairs…festivals, oh my! It’s that time of year when you see Ferris wheels popping up at the fairgrounds, and the kids are ready to get their all-day ride bracelets and get hopped up on sugar. I miss the carnivals of my youth when you’d just happen past one in a store parking lot that you didn’t even know one was going on. It was like the best thing ever, and you’d go home with stretched Pepsi bottles, mini mirrors with Poison or Def Leppard on them, a few stuffed animals and maybe some feathers on a roach clip that you’d never use again.
Once you ran yourself ragged wracking up your carnival booty, it was time to quench your thirst with a lemon shake-up. Always a little too much ice, a decent amount of lemon and sugar sludge in the bottom that would only dissolve if you kept it around long enough for more ice to melt. Well, that is the hubby’s favorite, and he loves my version since I give a little more lemon to ice in my ratio. I have a fun way to shake it up that looks a little more sophisticated than the fair and is a good excuse to get your James Bond on as well. The video shows you how it comes together.

Ingredients
- 2 large lemons
- 1 - 1 1/2 tbsp sugar (regular or turbinado if you like a chunky sugar texture)
- Ice
- Water
- Tools needed:
- Juicer (This is the one I used in the video- inexpensive!)
- Martini Shaker
Instructions
- Slice both of your lemons in half.
- Juice one whole lemon and that’ll get you almost 4 ounces of lemon juice. Slice one of the halves in half.
- Grab the glass you want to serve it in and fill it about 1/3 of the way up.
- Pour the ice into the martini shaker, followed by the lemon juice, then about 1 tbsp or so of sugar and the lemon quarter.
- Fill it with water making sure to leave about an inch to an inch and a half from the top.
- Place the lid on the shaker and shake it up.
- When it’s done, remove the lid and the lemon giving a little extra squeeze of the quarter first then pour into your glass.
