Cut out cookies embody the Christmas spirit for me. I have cookie cutters from when I was first married that I still use now and they always bring back great memories every year I use them. We like to dress them all up in different colors and sprinkles and of course the best part is eating them! These cookies definitely belong on Santa’s plate and who knows, you might get something extra because they’re that good!
This recipe also comes with a delicous vanilla buttercream frosting to slather on the cookies. The video shows you how to bring it all together and what the recipe should look like in different stages.

Ingredients
For the cookie dough (*This recipe requires a 3 hour chill period*)
- 1/3 cup (76g) butter, softened to room temperature
- 1/3 cup (68g) butter flavored shortening
- 2 cups (250g) all purpose flour
- 1 large egg
- 3/4 cup (150g) sugar
- 1 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Dash salt
- 1/2 cup (63g) flour for rolling and cookie cutters
Vanilla Buttercream
- 1 cup (227g) butter, softened
- 4 cups (480g) powdered sugar
- , sifted
- Dash to 1/8 teaspoon sea salt
- 1 tablespoon clear vanilla extract (I like Watkins Double Strength)
- Up to 4 tablespoons milk or heavy cream
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat together butter and shortening. Add egg, milk and vanilla and stir until well combined.
- In a medium bowl, add flour, sugar, baking powder and salt and stir until combined. Then add half of the flour mixture to the wet ingredients stirring until smooth. Add the second half and stir until stiff dough forms.
- Divide dough in half, wrap in plastic wrap or put in covered dish and chill for 3 HOURS (or overnight if you’re doing it the day before)
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F
- Roll out dough on lightly floured surface until 1/4” thick. Have a small pile of flour at the side of the dough to dip cookie cutters in to keep it from sticking. Cut into desired shapes and carefully transfer each an ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake for 7-8 minutes until edges are barely beginning to brown.
- Transfer to wire rack
- to cool completely before decorating with buttercream, royal or other frosting/glaze.

I’m glad I could take you on a trip down memory lane! These were always ones I made with my grandma when I was little too. I know she’ll be with me this weekend when I make them.
